Library system

The concept "library system" is often used synonymously with "integrated library system" in the meaning of a computer system with an online library catalog and automated library functions such as lending, recall, statistics etc. Examples of internationally known library systems are OCLC, Inlex, Geac, CLSI and Garlyle. The underlying understanding of "system" is here technological.

The term may also be used in other meanings, such as the library system in Denmark (cf., Svane-Mikkelsen, 1997) about the administrative organization of libraries. The underlying understanding of "system" is here social.

The term library system implies a systems view of libraries. Such a view is one among other possible views, and a view with advantages as well as disadvantages.
