Professional profile
Peter Ingwersen became Research Professor 2001 and Full professor from January 2006 in Information Retrieval. He is Affiliate Professor (Docent) at Åbo Akademi University, Finland, from 1997 and 2004-08 member of the Executive Board of the Nordic Research School in LIS (NORSLIS), sponsored by NORDFORSK.
Research expertise:
He has carried out experimental research on cognitive aspects of task-based user-system interaction and served in several Esprit projects as expert consultant to the EU Commission. He was research fellow at ESA-IRS, Frascati, Italy, 1981-84. He participated in the three-year ESPRIT Long Term Research Workshop: MIRA on multimedia IR and evaluation. From 1996-2000 he was leading partner of the Centre for Informetric Studies. In 1997-98 he initiated the field of Webometrics together with the late Thomas C. almind. Lately, he heads the TAPIR research group at the Royal School of LIS on text accessibility in interactive Information Retrieval as well as continuing the study of scientific communication patterns through citation analyses. He organized the 1992 ACM-SIGIR Conference in Denmark and has served as PC Chair twice. He is among the initiators of the CoLIS and IIIX Conferences.

He has published several books, among which two have received much international recognition: The Turn: Integration of Information Seeking and Retrieval in Context, co-authored by Kalervo Järvelin; Springer, 2005, and Information Retrieval Interaction, Taylor Graham, 1992, and more than 90 journal articles and conference papers, in addition to editing work, for which he has received more than 1,000 citations excl. self-citations in Web of Science. He is member of several editorial boards of internationally reputed journals of the fields of IR and Information Science.
He has been visiting scholar in Italy, The European Space Agency, Online Service Division, 1980-84, USA, 1987, Japan, 1996 and South Africa, 1997. From 1998-2000 he co-chaired a DANIDA sponsored PhD-network in South Africa. In 1999-2002 he served as NORFA Affiliate Professor at the Dept. of Information Studies, Tampere University, Finland. He has been member of 20 professorial evaluation committees in 5 countries and external opponent in 20 doctoral examinations in 7 countries worldwide. He has supervised 6 doctoral students as well as visiting Chinese, Japanese, Spanish and UK professorial, post-doctoral and doctoral researchers. Since 1992 he gives frequently lectures at tutorials and in doctoral fora at conferences and at the European research school (ESSIR) on IR and Users in Context. He has organized many doctoral seminars in a Nordic context, sponsored first by NordisNet and presently by NORSLIS.

The TURN: Integration of Information Seeking and Retrieval in Context
by P. Ingwersen & Kalervo Järvelin ,
The Turn analyzes the research of information seeking and retrieval (IS&R) and proposes a new direction of integrating research in these two areas. Central themes in The Turn include:
Research models, frameworks and theories; search and work tasks & situations in context; interaction between humans and machines; information acquisition, relevance and information use; research design and methodology - based on a structured set of explicitly discussed variables ? all set into the holistic cognitive approach.
